Buying Titanium Electrodes: Plates, Assemblies, or a Complete Cell?

Clarify the supply scope, excluded items and integration responsibilities before comparing titanium electrode quotations for electrochlorination equipment.

Discuss this requirement

Before comparing titanium electrode quotations, define what must arrive: individual electrodes, an assembled electrode set, or a cell with its housing and interfaces. Then identify who will integrate that supply into the equipment. For electrochlorination projects, the word “complete” needs an itemized scope; it does not tell you whether power, controls or other system equipment are included.

Start with the supply boundary

Use the following distinctions as purchasing questions, rather than universal product definitions. Ask each supplier to describe its own scope against the same drawing and parts list.

Individual plates or mesh electrodes

What to identify in the quotation: Each part, quantity, substrate and coating requirement, dimensions, and any attached terminals. What still needs a named owner: Electrode arrangement, spacing, supports, assembly and integration into the cell.

Electrode assembly

What to identify in the quotation: Which electrodes, spacers, supports, fasteners and electrical connections are included in the assembled unit. What still needs a named owner: Any excluded housing, seals, external connections and equipment integration.

Complete electrolytic cell

What to identify in the quotation: The electrode assembly, housing, ports, seals, terminals and any instruments specifically included. What still needs a named owner: Power supply, controls, external piping and the remaining process equipment, unless expressly included.

The distinction is visible in manufacturer documentation. Evoqua’s OSEC B-Pak FAQ describes an electrode core inside the cell and a transformer/rectifier supplying DC power. This is an example of one equipment design, not a definition of every titanium electrode product. OSEC B-Pak FAQ, page 7.

A photograph can help identify an arrangement, but it cannot establish what the quotation includes. Ask for excluded items as well as included items.

A complete cell still needs a system scope

For a concrete example, the OSEC B-Pak technical sheet lists electrolyzer cells, a control panel, a brine pump and a water softener on the skid. It lists the transformer/rectifier and tanks separately. Those distinctions show why buying a cell and buying a working hypochlorite-generation system are different purchasing scopes. For your project, record who specifies, supplies and verifies the DC power interface, process connections, controls and required protective functions. Include hydrogen handling in that responsibility discussion for hypochlorite-generation equipment. Assign system design and commissioning responsibilities to the relevant equipment team before ordering components.

These manufacturer documents illustrate system architecture. Their ratings, construction details and operating limits are not specifications for KUAYANG products or evidence of compatibility.

Make two quotations describe the same delivery

Consider an illustrative comparison: one offer covers loose electrodes, while another covers electrodes assembled with supports and terminals. A comparison of the two unit prices would leave assembly work and additional parts unaccounted for.

A short scope schedule makes the difference visible. Against each required item, record included, excluded, or to be confirmed, together with the responsible supplier or project team. Treat an unanswered item as unresolved.

For each line item, state the quantity, the unit of supply (piece, assembly or cell), and the number of electrodes included; use the same basis when comparing offers. If the quotation uses “one set,” specify exactly which parts that set contains. Identify any existing parts that the project intends to retain and who will assess their suitability for reuse.

Agree on the handover before placing an order

Separate component acceptance from equipment acceptance. For the supplied parts, agree on the drawing revision, inspection items, delivery documents and who may approve deviations; obtain that approval before manufacture or shipment, as applicable. Where a sample trial is needed, record who provides the equipment, runs the evaluation and decides whether the agreed criteria have been met.

If a chlorine-output target is part of the project, identify who will verify it in the intended equipment and under which agreed conditions. A component drawing alone does not establish system output. Use the electrochlorination selection guide for the operating inputs behind that review.
